jakarta & borobudur

here are some of our most recent happenings. we went over to borobudur to celebrate our 12th anniversary. it was a great time. the candi (or temple) was amazing as you'll see.

tomorrow morning we're headed off to bandung until friday afternoon. we have heard good things about bandung.

me on my first bajaj ride in jakarta.

the gado gado lunch we had with ajip rosidi. b interviewed ajip, and i got to join in on the lunch. the gado gado was so good.

 brian with ajip.

a view from the taxi on our way to borobudur. there were a lot of rice paddy fields out there. you can't see them here, but there are also two active volcanoes near borobudur. when we left, we saw smoke coming out of one of them.

the view of the rice paddy field from the terrace at our hotel in borobudur.

a snake (or ular) we saw while we ate lunch our first day in borobudur.

b eating some enak sate ayam (chicken satay).

our first good view of borobudur!

me and b wearing our "foreigner" sarongs in front of borobudur. borobudur is the largest buddhist temple in the world.

me standing next to an image of the gadjah berwarna putih (white elephant).

our tour guide, latif, who i thought looked like a cross between obama and tiger woods.

for willie: the frog we saw at the temple.

notice the volcano in the background.

this is at the very top of the temple. there are 72 stupas, each with a buddha statue inside. this one, they opened up so you could see the buddha.

i like this one of b.

by this point, the sun was out in fuller force (still only about 8:30am), and it was hot out.

me in front of the mendut temple. we ran into this one on our ride from borobudur to yogyakarta this morning. it looks big in the background, but it looked absolutely tiny when we saw it this morning. compared to borobudur it looks tiny!

Bororbudor! Interesting to see pics of you in places I stood in the early 90s. I'm glad you get to see it. I went with Roland. It was a nice get away. hot, hot, hot!

Lucky! It looks like so much fun! The Germans also have a fascination with Native American culture. I wonder if the Dutch do, too.
