memorial day weekend in the swell

over memorial day weekend, we went down to the swell with our whole family, roland, and brian's youngest brother, michael. roland and michael came down for a day; the rest of us stayed for two days.

 we explored a new area.

 it was hot.

i love these rock accretions and formations (and this hole, of course).

 these patterns are gorgeous.

 it was sunny.

our first night camping was fun. we pulled off the highway a little way and had a nice area to ourselves.

w climbing up a rock wall with the help of a rope.

we went to church sunday morning and then hit the desert again.

w climbed up to this ledge--so b wanted to try it too.

i didn't get pictures of w climbing up the first time--so he tried again. with a little less luck the second time around.

then s found her own ledge to climb up on.

we didn't find any rock art, which was surprising. but as we were hiking in the afternoon on the second day, i was bringing up the rear. i stopped when i saw the big horn sheep skull below and said "hey, are you not interested in this?"

and, of course, everyone was interested in it. especially brian; he said he had always wanted to find a big horn sheep skull. this was by far the highlight of our expedition.

b and w took turns (and sometimes me) carrying the skull carefully. b enjoyed placing in strategic locations to take pictures of it.

here it is among the yuccas...

...which, btw, are really nice too.

we finally found some real water--late in the second day. there was no water on this outing, which meant we were grateful that we brought more water than we usually carry for hikes.

i love the shadow on this one.

 the skull in the sand.

you can sort-of see the sweat marks on b's shirt (that's why we took this picture).

our second night of camping was fun.
