final spain post -- the last of toledo

our last day in spain, we went to toledo, which is just a short train ride from madrid. it is the home of (while he was an adult) and is just generally a beautiful and charming old city. and it just so happened that our day in toledo was my 36th birthday. so quite a way to ring in my new year!

here we are at the zany place we ate lunch at. sadly, the food wasn't very good, but the place was really interesting. it seemed to be in the proprietor's home.

you can't see it well, but this is looking through a glassed-in crack in the floor down to the old roman road below.

palettes! and a really cool way to use them at that.

a last supper mural that was really cool.

 a neat old tapestry.

 a triptych.

an el greco. (we also saw the famous count orgaz el greco painting--probably his most famous--but you couldn't take any pictures. it is a really neat painting though.)

i thought this one was interesting.

 sebuah pelangi.

b had so much fun in toledo.

 i love this picture.

and this one. b fell asleep on the 30-minute train ride back to madrid.

the big train station in madrid had this cool red-eared slider display area.
