oregon 7: driving up north on the coast

we spent that night at the motel 6 in cb. there aren't a lot of hotel options in the area, and this one was about the only one on expedia that was under $100, but it was not a great place. the room was fine, but it was a bit scary. well, not scary-scary so much as it just didn't feel all that safe. we told the kids not to open the curtains. and w thought the sign on the door--informing you that you should always keep the door securely locked--was funny. funny? i wouldn't stay there again. if you're in the area, it's worth spending a little more for a better place.

we got out of nb/cb that morning and headed up 101. b liked this fat used furniture sign.

we stopped at tugman again to eat breakfast there.

there was a rock shop right next to tugman that we stopped at. the kids each picked out a little gift (w a ring and s a little pouch/necklace).

we looked quickly at the lighthouse near winchester bay.

b liked this that he found at a thrift store we stopped at in florence.

 one of b's best selfies!

we stopped at a beach north of florence. i don't remember the name.

this beach had more people than we saw at probably all of the other beaches combined.

there were also vacation homes and a hotel right there by the beach. i didn't know there were places like that in oregon.

i like this picture of s jumping.

w and b discovered that there were little shrimp in the water. here's you can see some of those--as well as a close-up of w's face.

 a nice flock of birds.

we walked all the way down the beach to the jetty.

b wrote our initials in the sand. fun!

a look over the top of the jetty.

there weren't a lot of rocks on this beach either. but it was good to get out to stretch our legs.

 a dead bird.

wah! what a cool root system.

we got back into our car and went to heceta head lighthouse/beach. this was definitely one of, if not the most, beautiful areas we went to.

the setting is gorgeous there--very wooded, lots of berries, and rocky.

this lighthouse was in good shape.

our guide. we were able to go inside the lighthouse but not all the way up to the top.

 original brick.

the light--this lighthouse is still in use.

one of the old caretaker homes on the lighthouse property. now this building is a b and b. our guide told us it's expensive.

after looking at the lighthouse, we walked around the beach.

the black'ish colored rock and green algae growing on the walls reminded me of the black sand beach in maui (those are the two main colors there).

 me and s!

a dead seagull lying on top of rock in a little cave.

we drove up to newport, had dinner, and then checked into our yurt at the south beach state park. b and w went for a walk on the beach while s and i stayed at the yurt to get us packed. it was quite a project to get us packed, but i got it done.

i like these pictures of w in the sunset.
