oregon 6: tugman, nb, cb, maple bars, and the lucky star

we enjoyed our comfortable night's stay in the tugman yurt. the next morning, we got up and ate breakfast out by the lake. it really is a beautiful lake, and it was fun to see again. i went there many times as a kid and even used to swim there (there's a very small beach area).

after we ate, we spotted these slugs. s said these looked like hedgehogs. we thought that was creative.

w went to the lake and caught more newts. this was one of the highlights of the trip for him.

there were some kids fishing off the dock. here are two of the fish they caught. i would be very pleased to have caught these.

we left tugman and headed into nb to look around more. we stopped at simpson park. here i am by a rhododendron tree. this was a park i came to and ran through (for cc/track) many many times.

we then went to some thrift stores. we found lots of good stuff (so much that, in fact, it was difficult to fit it in our bags to bring it home). but how can you pass up nb or swocc t-shirts? one thing we didn't buy was this painting. b was quite taken with it--what with the cougar, beach ball, and butterfly. we just knew we wouldn't be able to squeeze it in though.

we stopped by nbhs to look around. the front looked very familiar.

the mosaic looked very familiar too. perhaps this is why i have long-since liked mosaics.

going up to the jr hall.

when i was a junior, i would eat lunch in front of this window nearly every day.

walking over to the freshman hall.

 lots of good courtyard shots.

maybe someone didn't like the seniors very much.

 looking into my mom's classroom.

what!? someone put "pirates" on the top step here. what's worse than a pirate lover?

coming over to the back entrance to the track/football field. i'm not really sure what i'm doing in this series of pictures, but it seems like i might be falling.

interestingly, they were resurfacing the track. ah, so many fond memories of this track.

b wanted me to look like i was starting a race. i told him that distance runners don't start like this, but you can't argue with the photographer.

looking inside mr. demming's room. i think those are the same soccer ball and bulldog pictures on his window that were there when i was a student there.

jason was a good friend of stuart's who tragically died too young.

 the barker newsstand.

aimee was a girl from my class who also died too young.

who knew we had a mission statement?

the old seminary house. it has changed a lot since the good old days. i attended all four years of seminary in this house--just one block off campus.

we went into cb and entered mingus park.

b and i walked around the park some, and w and s played at the playground.

b's caption for this shot is "dare to be different!"

i love how tall these trees are.

b wanted some pictures of him on the red bridge.

i like this one because you can see the rain. this was actually one of the only times we had rain. it wasn't raining as hard as it looks like it is though, which was nice.

we stopped by the egyptian theater. it no longer shows movies (it shows things like plays i believe), but it has been renovated/restored. i'd love to go inside it again some day. it was closed when we stopped by it. i hear they still have the huge relief statue of an egyptian man. i loved that statue as a kid--it was so cool.

unfortunately, taylor made (the most amazing donut shop ever) shut down awhile ago. but about a year ago someone else bought the old place and is making/selling fresh donuts again. so we stopped by to get some donuts. and what do you know--the maple bars were big and delicious still. and the inside of the joint looked exactly the same.

here i am explaining what makes a good maple bar.

it needs to be a thick, substantial dough.

when you bite into the donut, it should have substance--it shouldn't melt in your mouth (like krispy kreme donuts do). you should need to chew.

there should also be a good amount of maple glaze on it. but it shouldn't be a frosting that thick (not like these new thickly-frosted cupcakes).

there needs to be plenty of glaze (that just tastes like maple--not buttery), but not frosting.

the maple bar also needs to be big. long, wide, and tall. again, there needs to be substance to a maple bar.

i liked my maple bar so much that i wanted another one. so we all got a second donut!

we drove out to see if my old family friends the johnsons still lived in the outskirts of cb. they used to own/operate a small saw mill. but, it turns out, they sold the mill and moved away many years ago.

we stopped at the cb waterfront area to look around.

benetti's--one restaurant i always wanted to eat at when i was a kid but never have. it always seemed like the epitome of fanciness. now, i never want to go out for italian food.

this place had good looking and well-priced seafood. if we wouldn't have just eaten two big donuts (and already had lots of seafood on this trip), i would have been tempted to get a bowl of clam chowder.

it was at this time that we had our run-in with the methman who was arguing loudly with a biker dude and his wife/girlfriend. the swearing got intense quickly, so we decided to turn around. then the methman started getting agitated and following the biker couple (and in general heading in our direction) so we started walking quickly/jogging to our car. we got in and drove away but noticed, as we got closer, that the methman was getting picked up by the police.

winding our way through cb, we spotted some fences we liked.

we went back into nb and stopped at my house again. we saw our old neighbors, the hubbards, and chatted with them for awhile. it was good to see them--they looked very much the same as they did 20 years ago. here, b took a picture of me before we got settled. i'm not sure why i have such a big smile on my face.

but i felt a lot more comfortable once i had my arms around brian and betty.

i pointed out to b that this business has been there for as long as i can remember. it is fun to see that some things haven't changed.

we ate dinner that night at the lucky star. it opened while i was in hs. when i was a sr i tried to get a job there, but they didn't hire me. they did hire my friend, liz, though. b and i ate there shortly before we got married.

here, s took a picture of us recreating the meal we had here 15 years earlier.

we enjoyed our meal (although it was more food than we needed). i especially admired this bench right up against the edge of the sidewalk. you would want to be careful sitting on this bench given that 101 is right behind it.
