oregon 2b: sunset, shore acres, cape arago, and horsfall

monday morning, we woke up and went out clamming with jim and ada. those pictures will be posted in another entry.
here is the front of the moyers house after we ate breakfast and are heading out to sunset beach.

some water coming out of a fire hydrant--you don't see that very often.

 at sunset!

it was a lovely, cloudy beach day.

we looked at the tide pools.

one of the most interesting things we saw in the tide pools.

w, s, and ada had their swimming suits on and played in the water. brrr!

a dead sting ray that had washed ashore.

someone must have really admired my hat and then written this in the sand.

b and i walked to the other end of the beach to explore. we both remembered very well how surprised b was when he went into this same stream about 15 years ago. he hadn't been expecting it to be so cold then.

it is still cold, but it was less shocking this time.

some of those fun golden berries the moyers introduced us to.

 interesting...

we discovered quite a few cairns on our beach outings.

jim joined us out at the beach with some kfc food. that is a tradition for the moyers to bring kfc out to the beach.

a crow. we saw lots and lots of crows in oregon.

b and i also saw a chestnut-backed chickadee at the beach, which was a new new bird for us and a fun one to see.

after lunch, we went out to shore acres.

pemandangan! as beautiful of a view as always.

 the gardens were lovely too.

there weren't as many rhodies as i would have liked, but the roses were out in full force.

and there were more palm trees than i remembered.

me and judy by a very tall rhododendron with a few flowers still.

 ada and sierra.

 walking into the rose garden.

a monkey tree with a placard sign that stuart made and put there for his eagle project many a year ago.

a cool plant from south america.

there were so many varieties of roses.

 we smelled many of them.

 our favorite one smelled citrusy.

these are plants in a green house. look at all of those succulents below.

i love the patterns on these plants.

then we walked down to the beach at shore acres. this beach more than any other has been what comes to my mind when i would think of beaches back home. i have wanted to come here for so long.

judy opted not to come down.

it is a beautiful, rocky little beach.

the sand is really fun there--it's very coarse with big particles of ground up rock and shell.

we came back up and went to the cars.

and headed down further to cape arago to enjoy the sea lions and seals.

unfortunately, we didn't see any whales, but they were in the area.

we had dinner at the moyers that night with the missionaries (there are two sets of elders in their ward). it was a meal of fried fish, which was delicious. one set of elders gave us a lesson, and then we cooked a few s'mores on the moyers' fire pit in the back yard. after that, b and i went to horsfall beach. no one else wanted to come--so just the two of us headed out for an evening beach walk.

horsfall is just a long stretch of sandy beach.

b peeking his head through the cool-looking hole in this old tree.

an interesting structure we found made of driftwood--the sign welcomes anyone to come use it.

 and/or sign it.

b found the end of a log and rolled it out into the ocean.

 it took awhile.

 but he made it.

 i picked up sand dollars.

we watched the sun go down, and then we headed back to the moyers for bed.
