oregon 5: cape blanco, port orford, clam chowder and oysters, and tugman

the night before we had a good time taking all of our rocks out and looking at them. s helped me organize mine, and it was good to see all of our rock booty.

w playing in front of our cabin.

after breakfast we headed down to the cape blanco beach.

there was a lot of driftwood at this one too.

we walked along the beach for quite awhile here too and enjoyed the rocks we found there--again it was a good rock collecting beach.

after walking the beach, we made the quick drive over to the cape blanco lighthouse. what a view! it was beautiful up there. i would have liked to try out the beach you can see below.

at the cape blanco lighthouse you can go all the way up to the top.

while we waited for our turn to go up, this nice man told us about lighthouses.

finally, it was our turn to go up the winding staircase.

 a close up!

only four people could go up to the tippy-top at a time.

the lens/light was really neat. the glass lens was the french original--nearly 150 years old. that's impressive to me that something so seemingly fragile in such a harsh environment could last so long.

 the view from the top.

the lens isn't in perfect condition.

the beautiful old victorian-style house owned by the rich landowner who once lived right by cape blanco.

once we were done at cape blanco, we headed into port orford. to our delight, we found a thrift store. b took a shot of this interesting shoe. we didn't buy it, but we did buy some old japanese glass balls.

the man who owned the shop gave b a copy of this poem he wrote.

we stopped in port orford to go to this beach. i'm not sure the name, but it's one i went to a handful of times as a kid.

 such big yucca-like plants.

it's a beautiful beach--the rocks just off shore are really nice.

there wasn't good rock collecting at this beach--so we had to occupy ourselves in other ways.

once done in port orford, we headed back up north again.we stopped at the face rock creamery again in bandon. w, s, and b got ice cream again. i opted not to; rather, we bought some extra aged cheddar that i ate on slices of apple. it was really good. we also stopped at this thrift shop.

it was a fun place to wander through.

you can tell we're getting into cb.

 some picketers in cb.

 still lots of wood chips.

the lucky star--we'd go there the next day.

the sizzler i spent two summers working at--as a dishwasher, salad bar person, and front counter person. it was not my favorite job ever. actually, it may have been the worst job i've ever had. but i didn't have to clean toilets, and that's something.

the moyers invited us back over to their house for dinner that night. they made clam chowder (with the clams we dug up), fried gapers, and fried oysters. it was all very, very good. b particularly liked the gapers.

the gaper is the thing just above the fork.

the moyers were very good to us. and all of the seafood they fed us was great. what a treat!

 some moyer family pics.

 w and ada cleaning clams.

that night, we stayed in a yurt at tugman. we checked into our yurt and then went over to the lake area.

an interesting indonesian-style glass box tableau.

at tugman now they have a great fish ladder that allows salmon to get in/out of the lake. these boards illustrate how it all works.

we didn't see any fish going through the ladder, but we greatly admired it.

we thought this was the funniest description of the process.

w and s went to the dock while b and i looked at the ladder.

w discovered that there lots and lots of newts swimming around in the water. so he caught some.

 what a beautiful orangey color.

i was impressed that tugman offered jr ranger programs. it's only a state park.
