Another Kampung and Parade

as you know, we love walking through the kampungs here and seeing the sights and talking with people. awhile ago, we went for a sunday afternoon walk and found ourselves in a new area. we stumbled across an old school that had neat remnants of its former life scattered across the front of the building.
 here's a tiger.

 and a duck.

and a giraffe (you can see the playground equipment in the background).

we entered a place that seemed to be for boy scouts. we could hear a loud bird from the road--so we asked if we could enter to see it. it's always fun to see a big cockatoo.

we saw this vine with these gorgeous flowers.

look at that pattern! i would love to have this in our yard back home.

we saw some boys about sierra's age riding around on little motorcycles that were very loud. it looked dangerous to me, but you often see pretty young kids driving motorcycles.

a neat wooden-looking pole. note sierra's new batik dress.

i'll miss the patina on the walls here.

 sangat imut!

some interesting stairs that led to nowhere.

i liked how this sign said that learning english was the spirit of future.

a good keychain, but not a good way to keep a door locked.

on our walk, i recognized where we were and took us to our friends' home (imma and didit), but they weren't there. imma is who i made the rainbow cake with. but on the way back to our home, i took us to imma's salon and showed it to b, w, and s.

a few days later, i took w and s to their school (named below) to have their final parent-teacher conference. this was their last time going to their indonesian school.

there was a sign at the school prohibiting pictures, but the kind folks in the front office said i could take some pictures when i asked for permission.

these are outside sierra's classroom (p3 france).

s with her teacher. s would often talk about her teachers--one of them being miss maker. but when i went into her classroom on the last day, i found out that her name wasn't maker. i can't remember now what it was--it's miss maker that has stuck in my head.

w outside his classroom (p5 germany).

w showing me where he had his infamous soccer accident. there is not a lot of room for the kids to run around and play in.

w with a few of his friends.

w with his teachers. the one on the right is miss yessy. i love her name.

the next morning as b and i were working inside the house, we heard a fun, loud noise coming from outside. it sounded like a parade, actually. i hurried to find the camera, put on my shoes, unlock the gate, and run to catch up to the the school children from the masjid down the street from us. it was a parade!

i am not sure what the parade was for, but the kids were cute in their costumes.

and they were kind--waving and smiling at me.

and this man had a microphone that he was speaking into.

the teachers or mothers were very friendly as well.

this could be the best parade i've ever seen.
