Ferry/Bus Trip--Night 1

as you can see, it got dark while we were on the mini bus.

a cute picture of roland with his arm around sierra.

once we got to bima, there was the craziness of getting our things off the top of the minibus and then getting into our full-size bus. times of transition were difficult! but we made it, and there was even a seat for each one of us on the full-size bus. no more smoke in the face, no more half sitting in a seat/half sitting on a window, no more standing and jostling around every curve!

although it's difficult to see, here we are on our full-size bus.

a picture of the outside (sumbawa) from the inside of the bus.

these seem to perfectly capture the frenetic pace of our trip--like a picasso perfectly illustrates the many sides of a human face.

at around midnight, our bus stopped at a little roadside stand (see the bright light out there). we were all tired and confused and thought that this was our dinner stop (we had been told there would be a middle-of-the-night dinner stop). but we opted not to buy a pop mie or chips--so a few of us just stretched our legs. i got out some clothes for us to wrap around ourselves to warm up. the ac on the bus worked very, very well. i also went for a little jaunt and went to the bathroom quickly. for me, i'd always prefer to just squat and pee then use a bus toilet.

we got back on the bus and then headed off again into the blackness of sumbawa. it was much more comfortable of a ride for me now that i could cover up some and not feel so cold.

but, at about 1am sharp, we stopped again. this time for our dinner. it was a big warung that had some nasi putih and watery gudeg. we mostly ate the nasi and drank some water. cathy said she liked the gudeg, which i thought was telling of how good nongko (jackfruit) and gudeg actually is since it was not great gudeg.

here we are eating and drinking our food. we only had about 20 minutes--so it was a very quick dinner.

after that, we got back on the big bus and continued our journey to the west coast of sumbawa. at some point, i fell asleep. the next thing i knew, we were at the dock and needed to get off the bus and on to our next ferry. it was about 3:30am.

here we are getting on to the ferry.

this one was smaller and much less crowded than the previous one.

we got some seats right in front of these two boys who decided to earn some money singing and playing their instruments at 4 in the morning! i was so tired that i only half remember them. b has a much more clear memory of them. they were loud--so loud that when the money tray came around, b didn't give them any. ah, if only they would have waited until it was later in the morning. we would have been able to enjoy them so much more then.

we were all tired. i think this is a good shot of roro's exhaustion.

another boy playing a percussion-type instrument.

 this one was loud too!

an assortment of strange toys for sale. i'm not sure when b got up to look at these (either while i was trying to sleep or while i was in the bathroom).

i guess because of the early hour, i didn't notice any kid looking longingly at these toys. of course, it could also be because i was either sleeping or in the bathroom during the entire ferry ride.

 wah! we're tired.

but even though it was early, the tv was still on for someone's viewing pleasure. this show looks like a real winner.

b capturing the water during the dark, dark night.

this ferry ride was much shorter (only about 1.5-2 hours). by the time we got off, the sun was starting to come up.

now we are on the island of lombok speeding to mataram on our same old trusty full-size bus. it was nice not to have to change buses any more.
