Bali Day 1

we woke up in bali the next morning after a nice sleep in our nice beds. really, the ferry-bus trip was cool. as cathy said, she wouldn't want to do it again, but it was a truly interesting experience.

we enjoyed this map of bali at our hotel.

look how nice the hotel is! we didn't swim, but we admired it.

 our luggage.

b and i often wished that we could bring back some mubel (wooden furniture). but how would that fit in our suitcases?

before we checked out of our hotel in denpasar, we ate a lovely breakfast. it had lots of nice food and drinks. again, everything just felt so luxurious.

we rode a taksi from denpasar to ubud. our driver took us to our hotel in ubud. it took some doing to find it (since it was hidden back behind the road and rice fields), but we found it.

and wah! it was so, so lovely.

cathy said it was the most beautiful hotel she had ever stayed in. it felt so good to stay in such a beautiful place! and it was only about $30/day.

we enjoyed the hindu environment of bali. all of the statuary and shrines were great.

and, of course, all of the offerings. they were everywhere.

a close up of c and r's wooden door.

me walking out to the main road from our hotel. we were surrounded by rice fields.

 ring-necked doves.

it was amazing how motorcycles would still drive on these very, very narrow walkways. you couldn't even call them roads.

 how gorgeous is that building?!

 another offering.

these bright orange flowers were all over ubud.

we went to the monkey forest sanctuary in ubud.

the rules (notice the monkey in the corner).

there were lots and lots of monkeys there.

if you had food, you wouldn't have it for long. a monkey would take it from you or force you to give it to him/her.

 a baby.

cathy was the first person to get a monkey on her. she wanted it on her.

 action shot! it jumped off.

you could buy some oleh-oleh if you wanted.

 some graffiti.

the puras (temples) in the sanctuary were lovely too.

we couldn't walk into this area, but we could enjoy it from the fence.

all of us, and a monkey.

 all of us sans monkey.

 monkeys grooming themselves.

wah! s got up close with a monkey.

 a great face shot.

another monkey got onto sierra--hanging from her bag and legs!

a woman who got a lot of time with a hungry monkey.

cathy really enjoyed having the monkeys on her.

 i love this picture.

this poor woman had this monkey on her for forever. she was having fun at first, and then you could see that she wasn't having fun. but the monkey still stayed on her.

this must be how b got the reddish/brownish marks on his shoulder.

 this is a great series.

roro trying to get the monkey to look at the camera.

this is a good one of b.

this is perhaps my favorite picture from our whole vacation! i love roro's face.

even though he didn't enjoy having the monkey put its hand in his mouth, he quickly recovered with a big roland smile!

there was a neat hindu cemetery in the park.

 that's a great monkey shot.

 a mother and her baby!

we liked the lessons these statues seemed to be teaching.

it was a beautiful place--so green and shady.

this monkey was trying to walk the high wire.

this monkey blends in very well.

 neat roots.

 a koi pond.

 s looking cute.

that's a great shot. i love the eyes and mossy face.

the color of the water was interesting.

me talking about something intelligent i'm sure.

what a beautiful place. i think i've already said that. but i'll say it again.

the smoke coming off the incense.

 a good family shot.

once we left the monkey sanctuary, we walked around ubud doing some shopping. eating dinner, and then going to a balinese dance performance (kecak).

b was really drawn to these. he loves signs like these.

 little yoga statues.

 buddha statues.

 a garuda!

 balinese dream catchers!

 these cool orange flowers again.

 another garuda!

and two more! oh how we wanted a nice, big, brightly-colored garuda to take home.
