pernikahan (the wedding)

last week, we went to our landlord's neice's wedding. they are part of a prominent family here--so it was a big event. it was really interesting to be part of. we all wore some of our best batik (except w who wore a popeye shirt that was given to him as a gift).

here we are sitting in front of the main backdrop used for pictures.

the wedding was at the bride's family's home. this was a painting in the front room that we thought was interesting. the anatomy, at times, is accurate, and at other times, inaccurate.

s with ibu dewi (our landlord).

both of the kiddos with ibu dewi.

these flowers hanging down smelled so good.

in the garage was where the bride's lunch was set up. here, the spoons are configured in a leaf pattern.

 a dome of water cups.

puding pelangi! this was served with ice cream. the ice cream was so good.

 selfie time!

the kiddos with ibu dewi's family. the woman without her head covered is the bride's mother.

 the bride!

they had a bright spotlight they shined on the people. thankfully, all of the women had a lot of makeup on--so it didn't wash them out.

 the bride's family.

s really enjoyed watching tv while we waited for the wedding to start. even when there was a lot going on around her (pictures being taken, people walking around, etc) and there was no volume on the tv, she dutifully watched the screen.

 the groom arriving.

b and i sat directly across from the groom and his cohort.

the head of each family (who seemed to be the oldest man)  each took a turn talking into a microphone and speaking to the other family's head (and the other prominent male figures in that family). we think they were speaking in javanese, which means we couldn't understand anything. but it was interesting.

after the family heads spoke, we moved out to the outdoor seating area.

as usual it was hot outside, but we were still able to istirahat (relax).

some of our readers will enjoy knowing that there was karaoke.

we then left the house, and went over to a nearby masjid. i'm not really sure why, but we waited outside for about an hour outside the masjid. both b and i fell asleep for awhile.

we didn't fall asleep, though, before b got a few pictures of the bride's hair. those are flowers covering her hair. and, actually she had a wig on--so the flowers are covering her wig, which is covering her hair.

the black swirly design on her forehead is actually makeup, not hair.

finally, we made it inside the masjid.

we staked out a place on the ground. it was big inside.

the bride and groom sat in little chairs in the middle of the room. they had their fathers there with them, and then a couple other men. they signed some papers (i guess making the marriage official).

then there was a ring ceremony where they exchanged rings.

after awhile, a group of girls dressed in pink came and sat by us.

i thought that this little girl in pink was especially cute.

we liked this sign. translated it means please don't fall asleep inside the mosque.

another picture. i'm not sure who the extra man and woman are.

a hadian to the bride and groom. all of the paper inside the picture is indonesian money.

the masjid had a tall, domed ceiling.

once we finished at the masjid, we went home. it was a long day, but very interesting.

A lovely wedding. It so cool that you are able to be a part of events like this.
