rainbow cake

i went over to my friend imma's home recently to make rainbow cake. you see rainbow cake at all of the bakeries here. and there are a lot of bakeries here.

we started off working in imma's living room getting the pans lined with paper and weighing ingredients.

we cooked the cake in the metal steam oven on top of the stove. each layer of cake cooked in this oven for about 15 minutes.

here is the cake batter. each bowl has a different flavor and color. the green one has a leaf flavor, which was fun. and the orange one had some flavor other than orange, which smelled good.

here is imma getting the ungu batter into a cake pan.

here i am putting the frosting on the green layer.

 more frosting.

here imma is making the box we put the cake in. she cut it out and then got it all together.

here's the finished product with imma in the background. i grated some cheese to put on the top. that is popular to do here--to put cheese on sweets.

on the way home from imma's place, we stopped at the salon she works at. she has invited us to get dressed in javanese clothing and get photographed. here are some of the javenese clothes for women that will be available for me to dress in. when i asked imma if she could do my hair in a traditional way, she said yes (i have short hair). then she showed me some wigs i could wear. i am excited to get a family portrait here!

i liked this batik runner on a table in the salon. it has wayang kulit figures on it.

we ate about 1/2 the cake the cake in one day! it's tasty. i have the recipe now so will try it back at home some time.

*****
on monday, we went over to a family's house from the ward (brother wawan) and had dinner and family home evening with them. we took a picture before we headed home. we had a great time with them.

on wednesday night, we went to the church to learn/practice a traditional balinese dance. we thought both b and i would be doing the dancing, but it turned out it was just the ladies dancing. and it turned out that the dancing was hard. at the beginning of the evening, lots of ladies were dancing. by about an hour later, very few were dancing. it was at that point that i decided we could leave. it turns out, this dancing is for a performance the ward will be doing in may at a stake event. each ward in the stake will perform a different traditional indonesian dance. our ward is doing balinese dancing. long story short, i decided i didn't need to be part of the balinese dancing for our ward. i will happily go and watch our ward and the other wards in our stake dance in may. i'll enjoy it much more from the audience side of things.

Fantastic time it seems! Enjoy the dancing and the culture and the family photo wearing a wig! Brian, Mary is so curious about how you did this with family...
