on our last morning in bali, we packed up, ate another delicious breakfast, and then headed to the airport in denpasar.
we didn't understand what was going on. but then we did find out what was going on. a volcano in bali or lombok had erupted and no planes were leaving bali for the rest of the day. we got re-booked to fly to solo the next day. so, ever the planner, i found a hotel in sanur (a beachside town not far from denpasar) for us to stay at for a pretty reasonable price. so, before we knew it, we were on our way to sanur.
then we were in sanur at our hotel. things aren't too bad if you have to be stuck in bali for an extra day! we checked into our hotel and then walked around town to find a place to eat. we ended up at a balinese/indonesian style restaurant.
the four adults shared a rijstaffel. that's a dutch word that literally means rice table. basically, it's a little bit of a lot of dishes--like tapas. it gives you a taste of lots of dishes. and it was delicious! b and i hadn't shared a rijstaffel since 2008 in washington dc with our good friends katy and aaron. and this was cathy and roland's first. so fun!
after lunch, we made the 10 minute walk to the beach and hung out there for the rest of the afternoon. the kids played in the water, we looked for shells, walked along the shore, and generally hung out.
this huge resort right on the ocean front went out of business recently. it looked like a ghost town.
that night, roland and cathy took w and s out for a few hours. they found a place to eat dinner (and had $2 a bottle water, which was expensive) and had a good time. b and i took the opportunity to have our first evening out/alone together since early february! we went to the beach front and sat at a table with our feet in the sand, feeling the ocean breezes, eating nasi goreng and drinking jus alpukat. it was great. and to top it all off, there was a guy singing and playing his guitar at the restaurant. he played patience by gnr, which made b feel (almost) like he was 15 again in indonesia.
