the nederlands - part 2

we loved our time in amsterdam and the netherlands in general. we had set a goal to eat indonesian food every day we were there (5), and we met that goal! here we are with our first indonesian meal. this place had the best rendang of the trip.

 a hanging armadillo.

 gorgeous!

we took a becak ride from the van gogh museum to our restaurant for that night. it was like being back in indonesia--except it wasn't hot and humid and the ride was more expensive.

 the blomenmarkt.

we took a day trip to haarlem. a friend recommended it, and we very much enjoyed our time in haarlem.

 i love this picture.

we happened upon this great indonesian restaurant. we got to speak indonesian to the owner who had such beautiful batik and decorations. he invited us to go upstairs to see his personal collection of indonesian memorabilia.

he had tons of really cool vintage posters.

i love this congres java instituut one.

our ristafjel there was enak sekali.

and we very much wished that we owned this old booklet.

we went to church on sunday. we were actually able to walk there from our hotel, which was cool.

after church, b and i and aaron (a friend from byu who also came out for the conference) went out to leiden, which another friend recommended. we loved our time in leiden!

there's a beautiful wind mill there. we toured it.

it's operational! and it loves mondrian.

 a funny postcard.

we ate a fun ad-hoc lunch of hummus and other dips and fresh bread. it was really good. then we made our way to the university there.

 they look like rambutans!

we went into the university's botanical garden, which was amazing! we discovered pitcher plants. and b and i fell in love!

they had an awesome exhibit of carnivorous plants.

look at these! we tried to figure out a way we could bring some home, but knew it wouldn't work.

 what a gorgeous plant, right?

this is huge--at least the size of my head.

 sleepy plants.

 beautiful stained glass.

 i loved these.
