halloween

for halloween, w was an indonesian parking man. this jacket we got in solo--all of the parking men/women there were jackets just like this. and the hat is a traditional hat worn by farmers, becak drivers, etc.

s dressed like a javanese girl. the blouse we got in solo at one of our favorite markets. the skirt is a solo-style of batik fabric wrapped around her. b is wearing one of his more flamboyant batik shirts and his cincin.

a view of the neighborhood. it was a truly lovely evening.

me and s. i'm wearing a jacket i got in jakarta and my big pearl necklace.so indonesian we all are!

brian's big day!

we had a fun time celebrating b's birthday this year. we celebrated with ourselves, with family, and with friends. and b got some good presents.

he got some indonesian novels translated into english. this one, home (or pulang in indonesian), is a pretty long one.

 this is wallace stegner's autobiography.

b also got the fun game suspend. b is not much of a game person, but when we played this game with our friends mike and suzette awhile ago, he loved it.

 another indonesian book.

the animal dialogues by craig childs. this is such a great book!

we got b the complete video set of ring of fire.

w got b a toy car--a muscle car. we often joke about muscle cars.

 another book.

b got the new biopic about brian wilson love & mercy.

s playing a game with dad while he is opening his present from her.

s gave b a really cool copy of the member of the wedding from the 60s.

b leading the music as we sang happy birthday to him.

 s joining in the fun.

 almost done!

now blowing out the candles on his baked brie birthday dessert.

 b enjoying his real birthday.

early october events -- selling our prizm, pancake breakfast, pumpkin patch, and fall break family scavenger hunt

we finally got to the point when it was time to sell our 96 geo prizm. it was a good car for us. b and i got it in january of 2003.

we got it with about 85k miles on it, and we made it to 215k miles!

a few weeks ago, i took w and s to get free blue pancakes. it was part of the homecoming festivities.

we also went with my mom, whitney and matt's family, ross and cyleste's family, and stuart and cristina's daughter alex to a pumpkin patch. this one was new to us--so it was an adventure figuring out what to do, where to go, etc.

it was also a remarkably hot late afternoon/evening.

here we are on the hayride.

the kiddies went on a animal "train" ride.

no pumpkin patch visit is complete without a face cutout picture board.

we took another ride over to the pumpkin patch. b is holding up the funny-shaped pumpkin that i chose.

w pushing around corbie in the cart with some of our pumpkins.

on our way out of the pumpkin patch, b found another true lover of the smashing pumpkins. someone who loves sp so much that their license plate is "adore" (their first post-melancholy album. if you don't know it, listen to it. it's good.). and they also had several sp stickers.

b's looking like a real tough guy.

this was his favorite part of the trip to the pumpkin patch.

a few days after the pumpkin patch, ross, cyleste, leah, corbin, paige, mom, william, and sierra (and i) went on a fall break family scavenger hunt. it was a fun day. i made up clues that took us into the canyon.

we made it to wasatch mountain state park and played around feeding the ducks, looked at the stuffed animals (and the extremely large gingerbread house) in the visitor's center, etc.

the weather was gorgeous. just a perfect fall day. our next clue took us further into the park to have a picnic lunch.

we all packed a lot of stuff--so between all of us overpacking, there was tons of food!

 w climbed a tree.

s and leah had a secret under-the-large-tree eating spot.

 we saw some wild turkeys!

our next clue took us to the olympic park in park city.

i wasn't exactly sure what we'd be getting ourselves into by going to the olympic park, but it was really fun. we watched several professional ski jumping athletes practice.

they were good! we saw them flip and turn. it was really cool to watch them, and to see them land in the pool.

the red spot in the sky is a jumper in mid air.

again another spot in the sky.

this ones a little bigger. it was so fun watching them.

then we went into the museum and the kids got to play around inside some winter sport equipment--bobsleds, skeletons, etc.

ross got in on the action too.

i don't know how anyone could think this is a good idea.

we tucked himself into the foot part of this bobsled.

 former olympic outfits.

i like this cowboy look for the winter olympic athletes. i think this one was from the early 80s.

 wheaties.

the icing on the cake was riding the ski lift up the side of the mountain to the highest spot at the park. while doing that we got to see some great scenery, people riding on inner tubes down the crazy high and steep slopes (see the green/blue surface on the right), and ski jumpers practicing their distance. it was a great way to end the trip.

but wait! that wasn't all! the final clue was that each of the big kids got a medal that honored each person as a worthy participant in the first annual family fall break scavenger hunt! wah! how fun. i loved how much leah, especially, enjoyed the day. she loved all of the activities and clues and thought the gold medal she received after being at the olympic park was the best. it was a fun family day.
