great basin trip - day 3 (norma post)

on monday morning, we woke up to a hazier sky. we didn't realize yet what we'd be in for that day (we ran into a lot of wildfire smoke as we drove home and saw a fire just south of our town).

nonetheless, it was a beautiful morning. we packed up and headed out.

we spent the better part of the morning hiking around the bonita mining camp. it was an interesting walk into the past.

our favorite is the little girl on the right.

there was a lot of old rusty trash.

old rusty trash of the big and small variety.

 part of a boot.

an old can where you can still read the writing.

 lighter fluid.

a cool rock we found. fossils?

i don't remember why we took this picture.

you can sort of see how hazy it is.

a rebuilt home from the camp.

this is s re-creating the face of our favorite little girl in the picture.

 a cuddly face.

we got out and walked around looking for rocks in a few places outside the park. we really didn't find much of interest--except b found this arrowhead! the rock jumped out at him since we hadn't seen any other obsidian on the trip. we took some pictures and then put it back on the ground.

brian has often thought it would be neat to have the name jerry. not because of the sailor jerry brand of alcohol though.

we stopped at a real working sheep ranch spot on our way back home. this was a real working outhouse.

we walked around the corral to get a sense of the place.

anyone who likes fanta is a-ok in our book. plus whoever had this grape fanta crushed the can like b likes to crush cans.

note how it's hard to see the mountains. that's the smoke from all of the western wildfires. we were getting smoke from california, definitely, and maybe from oregon too.

we stopped at an ancestral puebloan ruin site that made me grateful this isn't the only ancestral puebloan ruin site i've seen before. if it had been, i might not be too interested in going to another one.

here was the fire in the mountains just south of where we live.
