family trip to washington

a few weeks ago, i went on a trip with three of my brothers, one sister, and my mom to celebrate her 70th birthday. we chose to go to san juan island off the coast of washington state. it was so great!

for starters, the weather was gorgeous. it was sunny and warm most of the time we were there. then, of course, it was really fun to hang out with my mom and siblings sans kids and normal routines.

we went to several tide pools, kayaking, on an orca boat tour (although, sadly, we didn't see any orcas). we grilled salmon and had clam chowder. it was laid-back and lovely.

we saw tons of bald eagles, several foxes, seals, sea lions, star fish, deer, a camel, hermit crabs, and other wildlife. it was the perfect long weekend getaway with the fam!

waiting at the anacortes dock, we went down to the shore to see what was there.

the water smelled just like home (oregon home, that is). it's amazing how smells can bring back memories.

don, stuart, and kaye on the ferry to san juan island.

don looking around at our favorite tide pool (close to the house we rented).

a beautiful orange shell i found at the tide pool. there was a living thing in it!

the biggest hermit crab we caught and played with. i got my arm wet up above my elbow reaching down for this guy.

a look out into the ocean at the one sandy beach we went too. there were seals popping their heads up from time-to-time.

all of us before going on the orca tour. this was the coldest day of the trip, which is why we look so bundled up.

the fox that hung out on our deck for an hour on our last night. if you can imagine, this was just one of the foxes we saw there.
